Since we’ve gotten so many request, here is our original instrumental…..
@ThaBizness x @NI_News Drop Kendrick Lamar “Sherane” Behind The Beat Video
Everybody Always Asks Us “When Are We Gonna Drop Another Behind The Beat Video”?…. Well Today We Did!! We Teamed Up With Our Good Friends & Native Instruments & Showed How We Used Native Instruments Maschine, To Help Create The Highly Talked About “Sherane” Track We Did Off Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid Maad City Album!!
Dow Jones: I think you ment how many placements did you until we could live off music? Well we gave up everything and invested all that we had in our music and the belief that we had no other choice but to make it happen. We used to take trips out of town knowing we didnt have any money to get home and that we would have to sell some beats to get money to make it back home. I think those lessons early on really helped us to this day and let us know with hard work and good music you can do anything!!
Henny: When I was just getting started, I knew I knew how to play keys but I wanted to learn better programming, mixing and sequencing skills. So I listened to everything that I liked at the time, and literally tried to remake the beat, instrument for instrument. That taught me how to find sounds, how to program my beats better, and how to get my mixes to sound like what was on the radio. Over the years, learning those skills allowed me to sit down at the desk and do me with a wealth of knowledge… and naturally our own sound was developed from what I loved to play.
Henny: depends on the artists or the situation. I would recommend always sending or playing your fully sequenced beat vs a snippet. It always has helped us.
Dow Jones: Only play your best joints if you only got 5 killer joints only put 5 on a cd. Always put your best foot forward cause you might not get another chance to make a first impression. Also when you start out nobody will give you any time, and if you have 10 joints on a cd and you put your best 5 joints at the end their are good chances nobody will ever even make it to those joints. If your first joint off top is not banging they might not even listen to track #2.
Henny: Usually we start with mixing the drums then mix the bass with the drums. From there add the main vocals in and then mix the melody parts around all of that. Mastering is a WHOLE other beast. We are still learning…..
Henny: Give them out to as many people will hear them. It will only give you real live feedback and a better understanding of where you are at production-wise. Always ask for honest critiques and criticisms.
Dow Jones: If the only people that hear your beats are you and your homies then how is the world supposed to find out about your talent. Get anybody and everybody to record to one of your tracks starting out, so you can start to get your name out there.
Henny: Don’t send 30 second snippets and don’t send more than 10 beats at a time. If an artists likes what you got, they’ll usually want to load it up in protools to record, so give them the full beat. Giving more than 10 beats can get overwhelming… especially when your beats sound very similar to one another.
Henny: Havent created it yet… Still in progress.
Dow Jones: We always feel that our best piece of work is our next piece of work. We dont spend too much time celebrating to our old achievements we get more excited about making new achievements and breaking down new goals!!
Henny: Humility, Tenacity, Patience, and Faith.
Dow Jones: Success… The world only respects the winners. Until you have proven that you know what your doing everybody will just look at you like your crazy or that you dont know anything!!
Henny: Consistency. We get alot of people who ask us this all the time. If you are really serious about it, be consistent but not annoying in your approach.
Dow Jones: Its 2013 if you are making noise the world will found out about you especially with social media and the internet. Good news always spreads fast… But be careful cause so does bad news, and if your on twitter buying followers and buying youtube views people will know that your all fake and never want to do business with you in a real way!!
Henny: Finder’s Fee = 5%.
Dow Jones: It just depends its all about relationships. But if you dont have any relationships then sometimes you gotta lookout for those who lookout for you. Thats just life. Favor for a favor!!
I think we answered just about all the questions for this week. Thanks to everybody that took part and those who didnt or missed it check us each and every monday on twitter @ThaBizness from 7pm-8pm eastern time for Tha Bizness #MusicBizMondays!!
Henny: It all depends on the specific vocal. Wether a hip hop artists that has a heavy voice or a Pop singer that has a very light voice. When it comes to compression we really dont have a set dialed in setting every time.
Henny: Some of the material we have started for our own album! Shit’s pretty crazy!! Stay Tuned Serm….
Henny: Back in the day working with a known Hall of Famer’s kid doing pop music…. man… that was difficult. The money was good but the talent was NOT there!
Dow Jones: Just working with artists who’s managers like to over manage the music, when they dont really have a musical bone in their whole body!! Just let the creative people be creative lol.
Henny: Really there aren’t any real shortcomings, its all apart of the journey and your personal vision of what success is. Earlier in my career, I was sought out by many labels and artists to be down with them, but I never wanted to be tied to one specific sound. That allowed me to be more versatile but at the same time I might have lost out on some good placements. In the end, WE DID IT OUR WAY!
One thing that always has been invaluable is knowing the business side of things. That always kept us ahead and allowed us to never be bamboozled.
Henny: Keep checking thabizness.com. We might just drop some old instrumental jams on y’all
Henny: When it comes to a publishing deal, your best bet is to make sure you have music in the pipeline; meaning you have either music on radio, tv, or film, or you have production on a major label coming out. WIthout one of those, you will never have any leverage in getting a publishing deal. Once you have something in the marketplace, usually the publishing companies will start to track you down!
Henny: In regards to creating your own sound, I honestly believe it comes naturally just doing what you love. It just takes time and putting hours behind that desk. Stay true to what you like to do vs what you think will sell! That’s a true way of starting to figure out your own distinct sound.
Henny: In 2013, I would suggest you start working with the closests person with talent around your way. There is so much music on the internet uploaded everyday, the best way to make any type of impact is to rock with your own artist and start to build a buzz organically. Once you do that, and your buzz starts to take off, everyone will be looking for that new sound, that YOU created. (shoutout to Young Chop & Chief Keef)
