New Plan Dumps Vehicle Tag Tax
ATLANTA – A new tax plan introduced Tuesday by House Speaker Glenn Richardson would eliminate the vehicle tag tax that owners pay every year.

Richardson admitted defeat on a broader reform plan that would have cut property tax bills in half in exchange for taxes on groceries, lottery tickets and personal services. WSB-TV Channel 2 Reporter Lori Geary is at the State Capitol and she said cutting the car tag tax would amount to a billion dollar tax cut over two years; a plan originally proposed by Representative Mark Burkhalter. The new plan would cut the tag tax in half next year and eliminate it in 2010. The scaled back plan would charge vehicle owners an annual $10 fee to help fund a statewide trauma care network.
The full House is expected to vote on the constitutional amendment Wednesday.
